2010 Tallahassee AIDS Walk & 5K Run:
7 Steps to Forming a Successful AIDS Walk Team

Step 1

THINK ABOUT WHO YOU CAN RECRUIT to walk with you. Gather a group of people from work, school, clubs, church or synagogue, friends or family. Get ten people interested, designate a Team Leader or Co-leaders and you have your team!

Step 2

REGISTER YOUR TEAM and obtain your sponsors/donations envelopes for distribution to team members. If you haven't already done so, please contact Ms. Perry Thomas at pthomas@bigbendcares.org or 656-2437, Extension 225 to register your team.

Step 3

ENCOURAGE THE INVOLVEMENT of your group and promote the Walk with posters, memos, newsletters, and e-mail and by planning group activities. The Development Director (Perry Thomas) at Big Bend Cares is always available for additional ideas to assist your team building and fundraising efforts. Give each person interested in walking a sponsor packet with your team number on it. To have the most successful team possible, the participants need to feel supported by Big Bend Cares, the Team Leader(s), and each other.

Step 4:

GET SPONSORS! Ask your family and friends to sponsor your efforts … and ask them to pre-pay. Collecting the money before the Walk will allow you to turn in a donation packet that reflects your hard work on the morning of the event. It will also help you be eligible for any walker/team prizes you may have earned. Each walker needs to try to raise at least $10, as that is the registration fee per walker.

Step 5

TURN IN YOUR MONEY at the registration table on the day of the Walk! Team Leaders can turn in money for their walkers early — If you are planning on working towards the goal of a T-shirt, each person must raise $100 to receive a T-shirt. The T-shirt MUST also be reserved by October 6. Reserve your T-shirt by calling 656-2437, Extension 225. Can you turn in money later? Yes. We can take additional money the day of the walk or any time after. Remember that prizes are based on money raised by the time the Walk begins … so getting all of your donations in early is best.

Step 6

ORGANIZE FOR THE DAY OF THE WALK! Set a time and place to meet at the Walk for a team photo. Many teams meet for a pre-walk get together and travel to the site together. Wear your company, organization, or team insignia/shirts so everyone can recognize you for your group's dedication to the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Step 7

LACE UP YOUR SNEAKERS and let's walk! Come to the Walk Sunday, October 17 between 2 and 3 p.m. Have a Team Photo taken. Show your team spirit with a banner, T-shirts, or posters as you join hundreds of other caring and compassionate people. Feel proud that you are making a difference!
