From the Tallahassee Democrat:
Big Bend Cares began at a time when fear and stigma latched on to a vicious disease that bore the misnomer as “the gay man’s disease.”
The AIDS epidemic stole the lives of more than 100,000 U.S. residents in the 1980s and deaths soared to nearly half a million by the 1990s. People weren’t armed with information, life-saving medicine and resources like today with only drips of details and misconceptions about the virus that caused the disease.
Forty years later, Big Bend Cares has much to celebrate.
The nonprofit, based on South Monroe Street, is maintaining its roots as a regional resource for people living with HIV and AIDS and expanding its mission to provide wrap-around medical services with its Care Point Health and Wellness Center.
Leaders and supporters of Big Bend Cares say its an ideal time to showcase the rich arc of its history and kick-off the organization’s largest fundraiser, “Artopia,” now more than 25 years strong, on June 28 at the Tucker Civic Center.
